Captain Warwick Bracegirdle earned his first Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) during the Second World War. In 1951 he was given command of the destroyer HMAS Bataan (D191) and sailed it to the Korean War. His daring leadership inspired his crew as they skilfully attacked Communist forces that ventured within range of his guns, and he earned a bar to his DSC.

Over the war, nine ships of the RAN participated in blockading North Korea and conducting operations including maritime strike, naval gunfire support, evacuation, escort and reconnaissance.
